Down Syndrome Victoria is launching Daily Good Café within the Royal Children’s Hospital. Designed to offer far more than coffee and snacks, the café will create opportunities for people with Down syndrome and intellectual disability to build skills, confidence and meaningful employment pathways.
Watch the video below to discover the vision behind Daily Good Café and its impact on inclusive hospitality.
Hospitality with Purpose
At its heart, Daily Good Café is about turning everyday hospitality into meaningful impact. By placing a social enterprise café inside one of Victoria’s leading paediatric hospitals, the project creates meaningful community impact. Even a simple coffee purchase can support inclusion, training and community connection. Meanwhile, the café provides a welcoming place where families can take a break, staff can recharge, and visitors can enjoy a caring environment that extends beyond clinical care.
The vision is to create a café that feels warm, professional and genuinely inclusive. The café empowers team members with disability to take visible and valued front-of-house and back-of-house roles, sending a powerful message to children and young people that diversity and difference are welcomed and celebrated in everyday life.
Inclusion, Training and Employment
Daily Good Café is built on the belief that people with disabilities should have access to meaningful, award-wage employment and structured training. The café offers supported roles and clear development pathways, focusing on practical skills such as barista work, food preparation, customer service and teamwork.
Alto Cibum’s Role in Bringing the Vision to Life
To achieve this, Alto Cibum is proud to support Down Syndrome Victoria in translating the Daily Good Café vision into a robust operational reality. Our role bridges the gap between social purpose and day-to-day operations, ensuring the café is both impactful and commercially sustainable.
We are working across three key areas:
- Menu development tailored to a hospital environment.
- Operational process design that supports consistency and quality.
- Systems implementation that underpins people, performance and governance.
Alto Cibum aligns hospitality best practice with the needs of a social enterprise workforce. As a result, the café model is both compassionate and highly functional.
Thoughtful Menus for a Hospital Setting
Menus in a hospital-based café need to balance comfort, nutrition and speed of service while responding to diverse dietary needs. Alto Cibum is designing café, grab-and-go and catering menus that are family-friendly and child-appropriate, with options that work for busy staff as well as visiting families.
This includes careful consideration of portion sizes, allergen and dietary requirements, production workflows and pricing structures. The goal is to deliver food and beverage offerings that feel uplifting and reassuring while remaining achievable for a team with varied abilities and experience.
Systems and Processes that Support People
A strong social enterprise needs strong systems behind it. Alto Cibum is mapping and documenting the daily processes that will make Daily Good Café work, from ordering and production flows to food safety procedures, cleaning schedules and service standards. Alto Cibum is also translating these processes into clear procedures, visual guides and practical training tools.
In addition, we are specifying and integrating the right operational systems. These include point-of-sale, inventory management, purchasing, rostering, HR, and quality and safety monitoring. Together, these systems will allow the café to demonstrate its impact, manage risk and grow sustainably over time.
A Replicable Model for Inclusive Hospitality
Ultimately, Daily Good Café is more than a single venue. It has the potential to become a model for inclusive hospitality that can be adapted to other health and community settings across Victoria. By combining social purpose with professional operations, thoughtful menus and robust business systems, the project demonstrates how hospitality can become a platform for inclusion, resilience and community wellbeing.
Alto Cibum is honoured to contribute to this project and looks forward to helping Daily Good Café become a place where great hospitality, meaningful employment and community connection come together every day.
