Creating a New Waterfront Experience
This June, Esplanade Live will transform into The Street Social, a relaxed waterfront destination designed to bring great food, music and community energy to Docklands. Developed in collaboration with Development Victoria, the activation brings together the best parts of Melbourne’s outdoor lifestyle. These include street food, live entertainment, AFL, social spaces and a strong sense of place.
Shaping the Concept Behind The Street Social
Alto Cibum has supported the concept development behind The Street Social. In doing so, the team helped shape an experience that is commercially practical, guest-friendly and aligned with the waterfront setting. The goal is simple: create a seasonal event that attracts families, locals, visitors, food lovers and experience seekers. At the same time, it encourages people to stay longer by the water.
Food, Entertainment and Community Activation
The first activation will run on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 June 2026 at Harbour Esplanade, Yanonung Quay, Docklands, from 12pm to 7pm. Visitors can enjoy a curated food truck lineup featuring Beatbox Kitchen, Elephant Rock Calamari and Little Yarra Crêperie. The offering includes burgers, fries, Bass Strait calamari, French crêpes, galettes, Seven Seeds coffee and hot chocolate.
Food is only one part of the experience. In addition, The Big Screen will stream live AFL matches, while local DJs and acoustic artists provide the waterfront soundtrack. The Boombox Truck Silent Disco adds a playful entertainment element for all ages. Meanwhile, The Winter Lounge creates a comfortable place to relax with bean bags, heaters, blankets and casual seating.
More Than Just an Event Precinct
For Alto Cibum, The Street Social is a strong example of how hospitality strategy can support public place activation. However, a successful event precinct needs more than a list of vendors. It needs a clear concept, audience thinking, flow, dwell-time strategy, operational planning, programming, comfort, marketing and a reason for people to return.
Building a Seasonal Destination Platform
The campaign has been designed to launch The Street Social as a recognisable seasonal event series. Furthermore, it has the potential to grow into a broader waterfront destination platform. With the right mix of food, music, atmosphere and community connection, the activation gives Docklands a fresh weekend experience that feels local, accessible and distinctly Melbourne.
Hospitality-Led Place Activation
Alto Cibum helps precincts, venues and developers turn underused spaces into engaging hospitality-led destinations with practical concepts, strong programming and clear commercial thinking.
